Ramone Alston was convicted of first degree murder in 2018. He was involved in a shooting incident in 2016. His gun accidentally fired, killing a one year old girl. It was on Tuesday that he escaped enroute to one of his regular checkups. North Carolina law enforcement is still searching for him.
Alston Absconds
The prisoner was in a police vehicle at the UNC Hospitals Hillsborough. He was taken for a 7 am routine check up when he decided to flee. On Tuesday when officers opened the door Alston bolted to the woods. He had taken off his leg restraints, he ran off in his handcuffs still on. Police officers did not use their weapons at him because, “it all happened so quickly” as reported by the communications director Keith Acree.
On Wednesday a manhunt was issued of more 300 law personnels. Almost 1335 acres of land was covered according to Acree. The authorities believe Alston had received some sort of inside help to escape. They did not however specify further. A reward of $50,000 will be given for any information on him. Alston has been serving his sentence for life in Bertie Correctional Institute in Windsor NC.
Current Situation of the search
During a news conference on Wednesday the Orange County Sheriff Charles L Blackwood was quoted saying, many tips had been developed. Two of these tips were “rock solid”.Although Alston didn’t have any weapons at the time it has been informed that Alston “should be considered armed”. The investigators are not going to leave no stone unturned. A thorough probe is in order.
Little information is known about the search. The law enforcement does not want to publicize much and also since, “information has been limited”. “The ground search phase of this is coming to a close,” Acree says “It becomes more a phase where we follow tips and follow leads and work the investigative angle of this.”It is planned that Ramone Alston would be out in a maximum security prison, in Raleigh
