Ryan Johansen, was out on unconditional waivers by Philadelphia Flyers. By doing so they’re planning to put his contract in termination. The reasoning given by the team is “due to a material breach”. Philadelphia Flyers posted on X, “The Philadelphia Flyers have placed forward Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers today for the purpose of terminating his contract due to a material breach.”
A Severe Injury
Johansen’s agent Overhardt has responded, “has a severe hockey injury that requires extensive surgery which has been scheduled. Since being traded to Philadelphia Flyers, Ryan has worked in good faith with the club, its medical staff, and authorized third party physicians. The Flyer’s attempt to terminate Ryan’s contract is disappointing. We have been in contact with NHLPA and will defend Ryan and protect his rights.”
The Flyer’s just didn’t expect Johansen to make a comeback after his injury.
Johansen was traded to the Flyers by the Colorado Avalanche in March. He had one season and 8 million remaining in his contract. 4 million of which was taken by Flyers via the trade. With Johansen’s termination the team would be able to make 3 million.
NHLPA added in a statement “The Philadelphia Flyers’ actions raise significant concerns. We are currently reviewing the matter.”
Canadian sports reporter Elliotte Friedman added “Johansen is expected to grieve this termination; Flyers aren’t commenting, but have made it clear they will present their case if asked to do. So, while the contract may be terminated tomorrow, there is going to be a bit of a process here.” He also said “at issue is the injury that prevented Johansen from playing games for Philadelphi[a] after being traded from Colorado.”
Chris Johnston reports Johansen will have 60 days to decide. He’ll have to file a grievance to NHLPA. Coming to a settlement with Philadelphia.
